Human Trafficking

Fair trade, sex slavery, human trafficking, forced labor, sweatshops, child labor…these terms and more have been circulating the media for quite some time now, but what do they mean? What can I do about it? Doesn’t this relate to other, poorer countries?

As we dive deeper into our research on human trafficking, we find that this is one of the greatest evils our world has ever faced. We have also decided that we cannot keep silent! If each person does what they can to expose this evil, and refuses to support anything associated with slavery or trafficking, we are confident that our powerful God will use these efforts in mighty ways.

Some Trafficking Facts:

  • Each year, nearly 2 million children are exploited in the global commercial sex trade. (UNICEF)
  • After drug dealing, human trafficking (both sex trafficking and trafficking for forced labor) is tied with the illegal arms industry as the second largest criminal industry in the world today, and it is the fastest growing. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services)
  • Approximately 80% of human trafficking victims are women and girls, and up to 50% are minors. (U.S. Department of State)
  • The total market value of illicit human trafficking is estimated to be in excess of $32 billion. (U.N.)
  • Children below the age of 18 years represent an estimated 26% of all forced labor victims. (International Labor Org.)
  • At least 1 out of every 3 women in the world has been raped, beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise violently abused in her lifetime. (U.N. Development Fund for Women)

Human Trafficking is a real problem not only abroad but in our own back yards. Women and children are trafficked for sex all across our country, our state of Ohio!, and in nations all over the world. But we serve a powerful God and there is always hope! There are concrete ways we can all help to Stop Human Trafficking…

Here are a few ways that Come Up Higher helps, and you can too:

  • Buy a Candle, Free a Dalit Child…

The entire proceeds from the purchase of these candles will be donated to the Dalit Freedom Network, an organization which fights against the oppressive caste system of India and educates young Dalit boys and girls to keep them from being trafficked. The Dalits are considered the lowest of the low in India, but with your help, we can make sure they know how much God loves them. For more information on the DFN click here.

Rahab is a local ministry here in Akron that seeks to provide hope in Christ for broken women entangled in prostitution and trafficking. At Come Up Higher, we carry Rahab Ministry’s t-shirts and your purchase of these shirts will help to support this non-profit.

“The Heart of RAHAB Ministries is Compassion. We come alongside women who are trapped in the life-and-death struggle of prostitution and drugs. Then we stay. We refuse to see them as different from ourselves, then Christ’s love for them can flow through us.” – Becky Moreland, Founder

The Jicaro Project

Jicaro BraceletsOffers training, employment and community to the youth and single mothers of Granada’s poorest barrios. Specializing in the design and production of quality artisanal handcrafts, the Project combines sustainable local resources with Nicaragua’s greatest treasure, the hand labor of its people. The purchase of this jewelry from Come Up Higher will help to support the mission of this organization.

  • Watch Where You Purchase

As often as we can, we purchase products Made in the U.S.A. If our distributors do any manufacturing outside of the country, we research the sources of their products and speak with them personally about where and how their products are made. If their factories abroad are not inspected regularly, and can not guarantee that they are free from all exploitation of workers and forced labor practices, then we will not purchase from them.

You can join us in this fight by knowing where the products you purchase are made, and by supporting Come Up Higher so that we can continue to expose exploitative manufacturing practices.

Please feel free to contact us by email or phone with any questions about our partnerships or human trafficking! We would love to hear from you:

  • Free2Work

Free2Work (a division of Not For Sale) is an organization that tracks the supply chains of specific brands that are commonly supported in the USA. This organization gives each company or brand a letter rating based on anything from Worker’s Rights to Slave Labor. In addition, they now have a mobile app that can be used to rate a specific purchase before you buy it at the store. By scanning the bar code of the product, Free2Work will let you know if that purchase will be supporting one of the poorly rated companies. Click here to visit the site.
