The Vision

The vision for Come Up Higher was given to owner, Joanne Urbany, on a beach in southern New Jersey in 1999. There she felt the Lord show her that those trapped in the world of addiction need to “Come Up Higher.” Joanne was then a Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor and established the bookstore in Audubon to support herself and her daughter, Joanna, while providing material about addiction at low cost. In 2007, she felt led to sell the business. The following years were spent in further ministry to helping those in addiction, and in acquiring her Master’s Degree and licensure in Addictions Counseling. In January of 2012, Joanne and her daughter, Joanna, both felt the call to come to Akron, Ohio. Without clear reason as to why, but with their beloved store in mind, they sold their house, quit their well-paying jobs, packed up, and headed west. God continued to open doors and it quickly became clear that Come Up Higher Christian Gifts and Books was going to be resurrected! In time, and at God’s direction, they hope to also establish a ministry where those who cannot afford addictions counseling can receive help without cost. Your support of Come Up Higher is most appreciated. Joanne and Joanna are already overwhelmed with the Faithfulness of their Savior!

Our Specialties
At our store, you will find a wellspring of items offering hope, encouragement, healing, and comfort. Our gifts and books are geared toward supporting others and providing comfort during difficult times. We specialize in recovery gifts and resource materials for those suffering from addiction and for friends and families of those in recovery. We also have a commitment toward carrying books of sound Biblical doctrine and theological integrity. You will also find fair trade gifts whose purchase goes toward supporting those in poverty globally, as well as keeping young women out of sex trafficking. We care where our products are made and pay careful attention to their origin. Whenever possible, we purchase items made in the USA. When imported, we ascertain that the products are made in facilities that comply with protecting workers from exploitation and forced labor.
Our Calling and Ultimate Mission
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free…”
(Luke 4:18)
